A cultural institution in Panjabari area of Guwahati, Assam. Srimanta Sankardeva [শ্ৰীমন্ত শংকৰদেৱ] Kalaksetra is named after the medieval religious reformer Srimanta Sankardeva. Kalakshetra serves as a cultural congregation of Assam which was built during 1990s, in the memory of Srimanta Sankardeva’s contribution towards the cultural enrichment of Assam.
Heritage of diverse communities inside Assam is preserved inside the Kalakshetra which is governed through a group of executives, selected through Cultural Department of Assam, which is headed directly by a Director of the Assam Civil Service or Indian Administrative Service cadre.
The Kalakshetra is divided into several complexes including a library, a cultural museum and a children’s recreational park. The main attraction is the central museum inside the Kalakshetra which showcases the cultural articles & artifacts of Assamese community. Another thing is that the theater can accommodate 2000 people and hosts cultural programs. The Kalakshetra replicates the rural society of Assam. It is a repository of manuscripts and literature of the region.
Another section of the art complex displays a world class exhibition of sculptures and art. It also houses a heritage park where a cable car facility is also available inside the park for tourists. Nice view of the Shillong Hills can be seen from the fields of Kalakshetra. The Bhupen Hazarika museum is another attraction of Kalakshetra. There are also eateries, places of worship and emporiums within the sprawling Kalakshetra.
