Chandubi – Assam

At a distance of 58 km from Guwahati Railway Station, Chandubi is in Kamrup of Assam at the foothills of Garo hills. It is one of the great lakes in Assam and among the best places to experience within Guwahati.

Chandubi Lake was formed in 1897 earthquake. It was a hilly area with five hills, which got sunken inside the ground on this earthquake and thus Chandubi derived its name from ‘Chand’ which means five and the term ‘Dubi’ means sinking in local Khasi language.

Activities on Chandubi

Surrounded by forests, tea gardens and mesmerizing villages, the lake has a wonderful surrounding for picnic amidst nature. The chief attraction of the lake is the natural lagoon where fishing and rowing is common. Chandubi is also a paradise for bird watchers as it attracts large number of migratory birds during winter.

Rabha community has embraced an opportunity to develop the lake as a tourist spot with boat rides & angling. A few resorts have been set around, where one can opt for trekking with camping. There is a tribal village at Chandubi where one can easily grasp the culture of ethnic communities of Assam.

Festival celebrations in Chandubi

Chandubi festival is a major festival celebrated on the first week of January every year. During this weeklong festival, the local people perform their traditional & cultural dance forms, and various outlets offer traditional Assamese food. The month from October – March is considered good time for exploring Chandubi Lake.
