One of the best ways for exploring these significant sites is by hiking. Meteora’s architecturally elaborate monasteries crown the tops and create a landscape of inimitable beauty. Admirable museums contains many valuable heirlooms & promotions of Meteora’s heritage is also on display.
Meteoran landscape
Rising from the Plain of Thessaly in mainland Greece, Metéora is a mesmerizing set of vertical rocks, reaching up to 300m high, which is twisted into formations. The biggest among these monasteries is the Great Metéoron, by Athanasios the Meteorite in 1356 and enlarged in the second half of the 14th-century by his disciple and successor Ioasaph, son of Serbian King Simeon.
Amazing Natural Beauty
Icons, gold-embroidered and wood carved depictions, manuscripts, codices, incunabula, authentic national heirlooms, liturgical utensils for worship, simple items of everyday life or modern works of religious art presents Meteora’s unique name given to this region – “suspended in the air” which perfectly describes the main feature, as the structures were built on natural stone pillars, which is an architectural achievement. The Holy Monastery of Transfiguration of Jesus was founded in mid 14th CE. via Holy Athanasios the Meteorite, founder organizer of Monastic Coenobium.
