The Tripura Sundari Temple is an important and one of the Shakti Peethas of Hindus. In Matabari temple, priests of temple don vibrant red attire, creating a cultural site, captivating believers through rare dharmic rituals. In extreme northeast, Tripura Sundari continues as an integral segment of Tripura’s hindu cult.

The presiding idol of the temple is goddess Kali. The temple houses two identical images of the same deity named Chhotima. One is 2 feet in height ‘Chhotima’ and the other is 5 feet tall and it is known to many as ‘Tripura Sundari‘. Chhotima is almost in ruins. One can hardly figure out the attributes in her hands. The shape of the temple complex forms the shape of Kurma, hence the name ‘Kurma Pitha‘. Kali is worshipped here since ancient times. A reddish black religious significant stone (Kasti Pathar) is worshipped on the temple which resembles Kali. Maharajas have carried this idol at times of war and hunting expeditions.
History of Tripura Sundari
According to Hindu mythology, the toe of the right leg from Sati fell exactly at the spot where Tripura Sundari stands today. A grand fair is held at the temple during a festival, Diwali/ Kali Puja.
