Lohgad Fort Trek in Pune

Fort Lohagad is a wonderful fort near Pune that throws light on the rich artistry of the Maratha period. The fort is named after a spiritual leader named Lomesh. This fort was built in order to observe the activities of Andhra Maval, Nane Maval and Korbaarse Maval. After Bahmani kingdom lost its control, Nizamshahi captured this fort and finally in year 1670, Chatrapatti Shivaji took possession of the fort.

Lohagad Fort provides accommodation for travelers, which is known as Laxmi Kothi. Lohagad is also popular by the name “Iron Gate”. The fort is around 3400 ft high and comprises big balconies & doors. The main gate of this centuries old gem is known as – Delhi gate. The 3rd gate offers access to the guard’s office.

Lohagad makes a nice choice for trekkers from Pune because of its ease of accessibility with lush green surroundings. A beautiful lake surrounds this fort. Hanuman Darwaaja, Narayan Darwaaja, Ganesh Darwaaja and Maha Darwaaja are some of the splendid gates of the fort, of which Hanuman Darwaaja is the oldest one. There is a big cave outside this fort that was used to store grains.

Within the complex there is a temple with a tomb inside the fort. The temple built within the fort which houses a Shivalinga. There are 2 tanks which were constructed for water storage. Peculiar Vinchukata (scorpion tail) was designed to decorate the walls of this fort.

Pune has the nearest Airport & railway station from Lohagad. Further travel may be performed by road. From Pune one can opt for train operating between Pune – Lonavala – Malawali. From Malawali  Railway Station, the fort is around 9 km away. Through road, one can drive from Pune to Lohagad on the Bombay Highway until Malawali.
