Dipor Beel Bird Sanctuary – Assam
- A fresh water lake situated to the south-west of Guwahati city in Assam, India.
- One of the largest lakes in the Brahmaputra valley in the picturesque Western Assam.
Deepor Beel is a permanent freshwater lake, an erstwhile water channel of Brahmaputra. It is a lake which is one of the largest Beels inside Brahmaputra valley. It can be categorized as a monsoon forest region. The lake is a Ramsar site, a wetland biodiversity. It was once a dockyard under Tai Ahom. Later Mughals have also used the lake.
The depth varies from 1 m – 4 m. Around 219 species of birds were discovered and recorded via Ornithologists who have found migratory birds, a plethora of ducks, Shoveler, Greater Adjutant and Billed Stork, Whistling Teal & Garganey.
These are some of the notable bird species found on this sanctuary. Beel has 12 lizard species with 18 species of snakes, along with 6 tortoise or turtle species with a concentration of freshwater fish species that can be found around this site. A watch tower is inside the bird sanctuary & boats are there to watch birds during October to March which is the best season to explore.s
