Poonjar Palace of Kerala

Poonjar Palace, an ancient architecture, standing in ranges of Western Ghats, at Kottayam district of Kerala, in south India. A 850 year existing history from Cheras & Pandiyas of Dravidian region.

Poonjar Palace, a craftsmanship of age old architecture, components engraved here are made of woods as there are vast hilly forest present in Kottayam district of Kerala. Granite, bricks, and tiles of clay were other materials. Designs look very pious, for its architecture which almost seems like a temple. It was build on ancient practices of Kerala vastu-shastra.

Carved steps in sides with doomed entrance, walls that reach up to three feet in height along with roof top, balanced in teak woods and rose woods, can be seen with unique carvings following Hindu temple style. This palace also has a Hindu temple, which is there according to Vastu-shastra, matches with the palace. The uniqueness is visualized only after sighting from the front area. On the interior, there are carving works at wooden furniture made of rose, sandal and teak woods. A massage bed is carved out of single wood.

Granite statues of Hindu deities, tiled roof toppings, which are slanting from the top with triangular shaped small domes on the four sides of the palace. Statues made of woods are all fascinating. There are rock cut lamps carved on the palace walls, which looks great when lit at night.
