Dipor Beel Bird Sanctuary – Assam

Deepor Beel is a permanent freshwater lake, an erstwhile water channel of Brahmaputra. It is a lake which is one of the largest Beels inside Brahmaputra valley. It can be categorized as a monsoon forest region. The lake is a Ramsar site, a wetland biodiversity. It was once a dockyard under Tai Ahom. Later Mughals have also used the lake. The depth varies from 1 m – 4 m. Around 219 species of birds are discovered and recorded by Ornithologists who have found many migratory birds, a plethora of ducks, Shoveler, Greater Adjutant and Billed Stork, Whistling Teal and Garganey are among some of the most notable bird species of this sanctuary. Deepor Beel is home to around 12 lizard species, 18 species of snakes, along with 6 tortoise or turtle species with a diversity and concentration of indigenous freshwater fish species that can be found around this site. A watch tower is inside this bird sanctuary. Boats are there to watch birds during October to March which is the best season to visit this place.
